We all have a sweet tooth from time to time but since we’re trying to steer clear from the unhealthy, sugary sweets we tend to reach out for the occasional apple, pear or orange to satisfy our cravings. They’re sweet but healthy, rich in vitamins and fibers which aid our digestive system and promote our overall health. Right? Well, we have to inform you that the majority of fruits you buy from your local grocery store are probably not as healthy as you think and it’s most likely that they’re covered in artificial wax made from the same ingredients motor oils are made of. Can you imagine the consequences from regular consumption of these wax-covered fruit? Devastating, to your entire organism.

Why it is that most of the fruits are covered in wax?
Well the wax coating most manufacturers use helps them preserve their fruits for longer and also makes them look shiny and more appealing. They first wash the fruits thoroughly, thus removing their naturally occurring wax coating and then cover them with artificial petroleum based wax. The manufacturers say in their defense, that the wax is used to preserve the fruit and protect it from the fungi and bacteria but in reality they just want to make their products more competitive, prettier to the eye and want to make buyers buy more, regardless of the consequences.
What’s this wax made of? Why is it so dangerous?
To be completely honest, nobody really knows what this wax contains. It’s not a food ingredient which means that the manufacturers are not obliged to list the ingredients and we are left guessing as to what it really contains.
What we know for sure is that the majority of these waxes contain allergens like gluten, dairy and soy which is really dangerous for people with food allergies. Aside from these ingredients most waxes contain preservatives and fungicides, and even artificial colors and dyes which are supposed to make the apple look more appealing. To make matters even worse a lot of these artificial dyes commonly used in food coloring have been linked to a higher risk of cancer.
If it’s so dangerous how can we avoid it?
As we already mentioned earlier most of the manufacturing companies continue to use this artificial wax coating even though they’re aware of the health risks they carry, so how can we protect ourselves? There are still some companies out there, like Tal-Prolong, Syncera and Semper Fresh, who are adamant at not using the health-hazardous wax everyone else is using and use a 100% organic wax instead.
The organic wax which is the best alternative is made of all natural ingredients like beeswax, wood resin and carnauba wax (palm tree wax). They don’t include artificial preservatives petroleum based ingredients or fungicides.
If this isn’t enough and you want to buy 100% organic apples, covered in nothing else than their own wax you should go to your local farmers market and buy your fruit form there, just learn when the fruit is in season so that you’re sure it’s fresh and preservatives-free.
If you have to buy apples from the store, make sure you clean them well before eating them or serving them to your family. As a matter of fact you should probably do this with all fruits and veggies you buy from a store. Artificial wax is put on most of them.
